PROVIDING THREE GENERATIONS OF SERVICE TO THE NORTHWEST
John L. Scott was born near Glasgow, Scotland in 1898. He served with British Expeditionary Forces in France and Belgium during World War I, and was trained as a naval architect. In 1923, he emigrated to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island.
In 1925, he set off across the country with his wife and young son in a Model-T Ford, "I arrived in Seattle on July 12, and I liked the look of it. It looked like the City Beautiful in 'Pilgrim's Progress." He began working as a sales associate at a local real estate company. "I sold a house a week for 10 weeks," he later recalled "That was some kind of record then." In 1929, Mr. Scott became an American citizen, an event he recalled with pride throughout his life. In 1931, he established his own real estate company and built a reputation based on providing quality service. He served with the U.S. Air Force Intelligence Service during World War II, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He received the King's Medal from King George VI. In 1955, he was honored with the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for his war efforts.
Scott's son, W. Lennox Scott, serviced with the U.S. Marine Corps and retired a Major. He completed his education at the Harvard School of Business and joined the company in 1954. During the two decades of his leadership, the company expanded its influence in the growing Puget Sound region, gaining an impressive share of sales and dominating the emerging Eastside and Southend markets. Following W. Lennox Scott's untimely death in 1977, the legacy was passed on to J. Lennox Scott, John S. Scott's grandson.
J. Lennox Scott graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in business and joined the company in 1976. He took the helm on January 1, 1980 and began the process of expansion throughout the Northwest. The company now has a strength of more than 85 offices with over 2,300 sales associates in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Lennox is a member of the prestigious Masterminds, a national real estate group which chooses its members from among the best companies in the United States. In 1995, John L. Scott was the 16th most productive company in the nation, posting 26,572 transactions and over $4.1 billion in sales volume.
